Of course we all look back on it fondly now, but on the offset it doesn’t seem to be a good way to sell books to children. Like all of tumblr, I was scared completely shitless by these books. But they also had this really unsettling draw to them. I would check them out from the library over and over and hide them under heavy objects and only read one, two stories at a time because that was all I could handle, but I read them again and again. Those drawings were 90% of the scary, and 100% of the reason I kept coming back. Those drawings had a lasting influence on the way I visualize ‘scary’.
